Hot Hot Hot: Cuba Libre. Get a close of sassy, saucy salsa (the condiment and the dance) and more at Pointe Orlando’s newest entertainment spot. With one tempting taste after another (Capital Grille, Oceanaire, Maggiano’s, Taverna Opa) the International Drive center is becoming a literal international point.
Now Florida’s nearby neighbor has its own namesake spot with the opening of Cuba Libre, billed as a restaurant and rum bar. According to chain’s (there are two others in Philadelphia and Atlantic City) owners the Cuba Libre name, which translates to “a free Cuba,” signified a hope for the future of the treasured island nation. The restaurants’ James Beard aware-winning concept chef Guillermo Pernot has created flavorful menus of traditional and updated Cuba cuisine. Interestingly, Pernot’s wife’s great-great-grandfather was a president of Cuba.
The Central Florida Cuba Libre is the largest in the growing concept. No wonder – with an audience of residents and tourists clamoring for fresh fare, especially from Latin origins, it seems like a no-brainer.
There is no doubt about what’s in store from the front of the building bearing a huge billboard illustrating old Havana treats (and a mischievous model’s knowing nod and wink). From the welcoming, freshly-muddled mojito’s to the dance floor exhibitions, the only thing that appears to be missing is the pungently sweet smell of just-rolled cigars.
Now about those sugary sweet drinks, Cuba Libre bartenders use freshly squeezed lime juice, fresh hierba Buena (Cuba mint leaves), a splash of soda and guarapo – fresh sugar cane juice pressed onsite – in addition to the potent rum. There are 15 varieties, including a Grilled Pineapple Mojito, Guava Mojito, Pomegranate Mojito and “Skinny” Mojito, a lower calorie option. And if you are into the rum itself, there are 70 varieties to choose from.
Dinner seating upstairs allows for over-balcony views of the bar area and dance floor. The décor pays homage to the past with reclaimed architectural items and recreated courtyards. And the staff, of course, wears the traditional Cuban guayabera. The atmosphere is perfect for a party and there is a private dining area for special occasions and events.
